An indonesian designer, Anniesa Hasibuan, has made history by being the first designer to feature hijabs in every outfit.
Anniesa Hasibuan began her fashion career in the early 2015s where she opened her first boutique in Kemang. She worked persistently since then and branched out to other boutiques around South Jakarta and also participated in Jakarta Fashion Week. From then, her beautiful gowns and dresses designed towards modern muslim women has gained popularity and she made her first fashion debut at London's Kaftan Festival in March 2015. She then has travelled to Europe and the United States to showcase more of her amazing work.
This breakthrough in the fashion world creates a huge leap forward to the acceptance of the muslim culture. During the intense and heated debate worldwide regarding the hijab or burka of a muslim woman, Hasibuan's showcase of women wearing hijabs in New York Fashion Week creates a large step forward in incorporating hijabs into mainstream culture. Hasibuan's collection perfectly signifies how muslim women can be modest, fashionable and confident at the same time.
On the other hand, some muslim groups do not approve of designers such as Hasibuan, saying the apparel designed are not modest enough. The belief among some muslims is that a Muslim dress is created to stay modest and not attract the attention of man or woman. Glamorous and eye-catching designs such as Hasibuan's contradict this belief even though the designs still cover up majority of the woman's skin. However, it is also important to understand that many muslim women find the hijab and dressing conservatively a part of their identity, not a symbol or a statement.
It's pretty safe to say that Anniesa Hasibuan, you have made Indonesia proud.
